There are lots of easy-care houseplants that have an autumnal look, thanks to shades of yellow, orange, and even tinges of rich reds and purples on their foliage. Unlike the maples and oaks changing color outside, these houseplants maintain their flashy hues year-round. The following colorful houseplants will perfectly complement your indoor fall decor.

Arrowhead Vine

Several varieties of easy-to-grow arrowhead vine boast pink- or red-tinged leaves. Two newer ones to look for are ‘Falling Arrows Ruby Reign’, which has eye-catching red veins running through its cream and green leaves; and ‘Falling Arrows Cupid’s Quiver,’ which has bronze-maroon leaves. Arrowhead vines often start out with a more bushy look, then develop vining stems with age.

Light: Medium to bright light from an east- or west-facing window

Care Tip: Water arrowhead when the surface of the soil starts to dry; this houseplant grows best when its soil is moist but not wet.

Aglaonema

Also called Chinese evergreen, aglaonema has increased in popularity and availability in recent years, thanks to colorful varieties like ‘Siam Aurora.’ The leaves of this lush plant are splashed with red, pink, and yellow tones. Red leave margins provide even more striking color. ‘Igneous Ruby Crab’ is a newer variety of aglaonema that features vibrant pink leaves.

Light: Medium to bright light from an east- or west-facing window

Care Tip: Only water aglaonema when the soil dries out completely. Be careful not to overwater.

Light: Bright light from an east- or south-facing window

Care Tip: Water your rubber tree when the top two inches of soil is dry to the touch, usually about every one to two weeks or so.

Light: Bright light from an east or south-facing window

Care Tip: Crotons drop their oldest leaves if their soil is too wet or too dry. Err on the side of too dry; water plants when the top two inches of soil is dry to the touch.

For example, ‘Painted Lady’ has yellow and green mottled leaves supported by pleasing pinkish stems. ‘Golden Crocodile’ has 2-foot-long golden-yellow leaves decorated with tooth-like serrations.

Light: Medium to bright from an east- or west-facing window

Care Tip: Take care to not overwater. Philodendron prefers to be on the dry side. Water when the top 2 inches of soil is dry.

One especially moody option is ‘Obsidian’ with silver-speckled, almost-black leaves. This variety’s leaves have ruffled edges and red undersides for even more intrigue.

Light: Low to medium indirect light from a north- or east-facing window.

Care Tip: With enough light begonia will bloom sporadically. No blooms? Move it to a brighter location but avoid direct sunlight.

The oval leaves of prayer plant are striped and mottled with shades of yellow, red, and green. Light: Medium to bright from an east- or west-facing window

Care Tip: Prayer plant grows faster than many houseplants and often needs repotting every two years. Remove the plant from its pot and inspect the roots. If they are tightly wound around the outside of the root ball, it is time to repot.

Care Tip: If nerve plant grows long, gangly stems, it is stretching for light. Trim back leggy growth by half, move the plant to a brighter location, and rotate the pot every week to more evenly distribute the light.”
